AKETTES YOUTH GROUP


Teen-AKA was established by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ®, Zeta Beta Omega Chapter in 1982. The name was changed to Akettes in 1988. The Akettes Youth Group is our longest-standing program. Members are recruited from high schools throughout the Genesee County area.

The purpose of Akettes is to:

  1. Promote Academic Excellence
  2. Build Social Skills
  3. Increase Cultural Awareness
  4. Strengthen Character
The members are required to attend group meetings, participate in community service, and engage in sisterly relations and enrichment activities. The young ladies participate in local community programs and volunteer with various community organizations. These experiences teach the members the importance of giving back and supporting their community.
      We currently have fourteen members who live in, and attend school, throughout Genesee County, including, Grand Blanc High School, Genesee Early College, Carman-Ainsworth High School, and E.A. Johnson High School. This is an exceptional group of young ladies who are diligently striving for academic excellence, increasing their understanding of sisterhood, and developing a strong sense of community. It is the diligent work of the chapter members and community support that has allowed us to maintain such an outstanding program.

      The Akettes meet twice monthly for general meetings, participate in community service, sisterly relations activities, church visits and cultural activities, and are led by Toyonna Green (Chairman) and Emani Davis (Co-chairman).

      MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

      Membership applications are accepted annually between September - December. Please review the application details below and apply online!

      Note: Applications closed on December 23, 2023. 

      Requirements

      1.  All applicants must currently be enrolled in the Ninth (9th), Tenth (10th), or Eleventh (11th) Grade. 
      2.  Applicants must have a cumulative and current minimum 2.5 GPA or above.
      3. Applicants must be single (not married) and not a parent.
      4. Applicants must have permission from a parent or legal guardian.
      5.  Upon acceptance each member must pay member dues annually.


      Application Checklist

      1. Completed application online 
      2. Signed Parent Permission Form 
      3. Letter of Interest
      4. Official transcript or copy of most recent report card meeting the minimum cumulative and current GPA requirement 2.5 or above 
      5. Two letters of recommendation from a non-family member. May include, but not limited to, teachers, counselors, principal, pastor, youth group advisor, etc.
      6. Attend the informational meeting (date, time and location to be announced). A parent, guardian or responsible adult must attend with the applicant.
